BioFab: A New Name for a Revolutionary Food System
I coined the term “BioFab” to encompass a group of cutting-edge technologies that are crucial for transforming our stressed industrial food system. These technologies, currently known by awkward and obscure names like precision fermentation, cellular cultivation, and whole organism fermentation, are all united in their potential to create a more sustainable and equitable food future.
Unfortunately, the lack of a simple and memorable name has hindered public understanding and support for these revolutionary approaches. This has significant consequences for funding, development, and overall progress.
BioFab technologies include:
- Precision fermentation (Every)
- Cellular cultivation (BkueNalu)
- Whole organism fermentation (Solar Foods)
- Photo/electrochemical abiotic processes (Savor)
By embracing the “BioFab” moniker, we can empower advocates and stakeholders to effectively communicate the value and promise of these technologies to the public and policymakers.
A Brother scope of BioFab would include: Newlight | AirCarbon, ADM’s PF cochineal dye, and companies facilitating this technology.
