Imagine living your whole life

as an undiscovered genius

What if Copernicus, Marie Curie, or Darwin had been born into poverty on a distant third world island.

Imagine yourself with little communication, on a subsistence farm.

Maybe you had some books and could read and write, and you loved science and building things.

Maybe you had some idea of an outside world far, far away… far outside your reach…

But Now

We Enter a New Age

An Age of Intelligent Machines

Things Have Changed

that’s 3000 potential untapped geniuses in Nicaragua.

Bright Capable Minds Untapped

OMETEKE is the dream of creating a technological, education
and entrepreneurial hotspot on Ometepe Island.
Centered around a Hackademy.

Hackademy is an Attitude

A philosophy A motivation

A Hackademy:

is a computer and engineering hacking school that turns traditional education upside down.

No Tuition

No Teachers

No Classes

100% Problem Solving

A flexible, rigorous, focused, engineering and programming environment running on peer-to-peer, inquiry-based and project-based learning.

Students control what they learn, when they learn, and how they learn.

Problem-solving, teamwork and critical thinking mindset are created. Rapid skill building and entrepreneurship are the result.

A 21st Century workshop, a Makery,  with laser cutters and 3D printers.  A for profit, cost centered workshop supporting Ometepe.

Ometepe Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics School

This Preparatory school’s goal is foment creative, enthusiastic learning through the best, innovative 21st century models, such as Finland’s Phenomenon Learning. With a focus on peer driven support, internet resources and self-reliance.  Essentially, give students the tools and support to teach themselves, individually and collectively, engaging creativity, ambition, peer collaboration, and goals.

English language immersion, STEM skills, and emotional self-responsibility will also be a focus.

Processes for self and group accountability, such as: truth telling, “Circle and Counsel” and explanation/consensus replace adversarial Debate Club and Student Senate.

* paying (international) students

The ultimate result is that the school would prepare local students and others for the Ometeke Hackademy.

OJARDIN logo

OJARDIN Incubator

A business incubator is designed to capture economic opportunities. To attract investors, to keep talented students on island by providing opportunities and fostering their entrepreneurial ideas. To build the skills and economy.

The Ojardin is where entrepreneurial ideas combine with tech skills and business development support to grow into profitable, problem solving businesses. This is the classic Silicon sweet spot that attracts investors and stake-holders of all sorts.

Even small internet businesses could generate a huge change in Ometepe, as digital epoch businesses are a scale of magnitude more profitable than modernist systems.

A for profit, cost centered workshop meant to provide access to traditional tools and 21st-century tools.

A Makery is a post industrial tool shop.

Omakery would be a public resource used entire community to support hack engineering projects. The Omakery would be a regular tool shop but also have 3-D printers, laser cutters, 3-D scanners and various other computer driven tools. Students and locals could hack engineering problems with these tools.

More Ometeke Constellation

Hardware

The mission critical Hardware Station sits between the other parts of the Ometeke Constellation, mediating, managing, building, repairing and finding hardware solutions.

This is a critical task in a very poor country with two hot seasons, Humid and Dusty. Access to parts and services are mostly non-existent.

Adult Ed

OSTEM can also provide offer classes for adults, including tuition classes. These would be aimed at students who are not fully ready to enter the Hackademy. We could also offer fee-based classes for ex-pats and visitors.

Business Spin Outs

With perseverance, the OJARDIN should nurture and bring to self-sufficiency businesses, that can then spin out. Perhaps they will leave the island, but hopefully some will remain.
