Ometeke: a Proposal for a Hackademy

Build a tech community on Ometepe Island, Nicaragua Leapfrogging from subsistence agriculture into digital technologies

“What to do with this property”

My buddy acquired an abandoned 40 acre lakefront monastery on Ometepe Island in Nicaragua, neighboring a sizable abandoned Catholic orphanage. Ometepe is a duplex volcano nestled in Lake Nicaragua, is renowned for its breathtaking beauty and location, making it a favored destination among tourists.

Initially envisioning an organic farming school and an arts and education project, my friend sought my advice on potential uses for the property. Proposing a shift from addressing substance-level poverty to establishing a digital hacking outpost, I conceptualized a project named “Ometeke.” The objective was to bring high-paying jobs to an economically disadvantaged area.

To convey my vision, I crafted a scrolling page/slideshow, providing an in-depth explanation of the Ometeke project. Regrettably, my friend has chosen to abandon this endeavor, not due to lack of support from the locals or the viability of the ideas but for other undisclosed reasons.
